Update #0: Cosmic Cantina: A spaceport cantina management simulator

Hello, everyone!

I’m making my debut on itch.io pairing up with Whitevault for some excellent pixel art. He streamed today and began working on some of the customers that will visit everyone’s cantinas, which you can see above.

Our idea is to create a multiplayer simulation game where each player manages their cantina to compete for the business of people passing through your spaceport.

We are doing this to participate in Sim Jam. I’m utilizing a custom game engine that I’m currently developing. It’s open-source and written in the rust programming language. The engine is a work in progress, and I’m still missing critical features to make a simulation game. As such, my initial goal is going to be getting a minimally functioning game first, and then add features if we have time.

This idea is part of a broader concept I’m hoping to develop, and so if at the end of this jam people are enjoying the game, I will keep building on top of it.

I’m looking forward to getting towards the goal of having a playable build as soon as I can. Today, I got these things done on the development side:

  • Set up the initial repository
  • Set up automated deployments to cantina.khonsu.gg (I didn’t say it DID anything lol)
  • Finished up implementing proper text wrapping for my game engine. I knew I’d need to display multi-line text, so it felt critical to get this done early. It was mostly just tricky debugging – I know I want to refactor that code.
  • Started working on the Main Menu layout and implementing event handling in my game engine. I didn’t push any code for this today.

I’m going to try to post each day during the game jam. Tomorrow, I’m hoping to spend more time filling out the roadmap, which will give me a better idea of the timeline of development.

We look forward to getting something playable in your hands soon!
