A downloadable game

The name is a working title.

I'm participating in https://itch.io/jam/devtober-2020 and this is the project that I'm committing to working on each day. This is an incredibly ambitious project, and my goal for Devtober is to reach a point where people can log in with Twitch, walk around with other players, and are able to interact in some fashion.

Basic Premise

The story is going to be front and center with this MMO. The basic premise is that there will be a story arc with many characters that will need players to help them out to achieve their missions. Their success will influence a war with evil forces that are threatening to invade. Eventually, everything comes to a head in one epic battle that challenges all of the nations of the world. And, taking inspiration from great stories like Wheel of Time, the world will reset upon the final battle's conclusion. Only, things won't be exactly the same the next time through. You will carry some things forward, and you will undoubtedly choose different paths in the next era. 

I'm staying quiet on the story beyond that for now as the worldbuilding is in heavy process right now.

About the Development

This project is ambitious, and I've been developing a foundation for this project for quite some time. For many reasons, I've decided to embrace development in the Rust language,  and I'm writing my own custom engine. For account management, I'm attempting to create a service that other developers might want to use to easily add a privacy-law-compliant login service to their own games. 

I'm currently using the excellent art from the TimeFantasy asset pack. This is just a placeholder, although I expect them to be in use for quite some time.

I'm going to be trying to keep as much as I can open source, including the game itself, although due to the nature of the story-driven aspect there may be significant chunks of code that I will need to keep private. If I ever shut the game down, I will open source whatever can be open sourced.

Monetization Plans

I want to offer a free to play experience with an optional subscription fee. The exact benefits of the subscription are still to be determined. There will be no other digital monetization. No microtransactions.  The subscription fee and merchandise are the main revenue streams I'm hoping to use for this MMO.

I'm at a stage in my life that I don't need a large salary to be happy in life. I'm hopeful that my monetization plans will be able to make this an ideal way to enjoy life and bring joy to others'.

Where to follow along

During Devtober I'm focusing posting on the devlog here on itch.io. After Devtober, I will likely slow my posting down to closer to a weekly basis. I'll post them here, but I also have community forums where I post about all of the projects, not just the game. I'd love to start having discussions about the game over there. Lastly, I try to stream a few times a week on Twitch.
